Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association Supports Suvarnabhumi Customs in Gem Seizure Valuation, While Sharing Industry Knowledge with AIGS Students
The Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA), in collaboration with the Gems, Jewelry and Precious Metal Confederation of Thailand, supported the operations of the Passenger Inspection Customs Office at Suvarnabhumi Airport by assigning experts to assist in the inspection and valuation of seized gemstones and jewelry, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance with established procedures.
In this assessment, Mr. Chomphol Phornchindarak, President of TGJTA, together with Mr. Hemant Kumar Jain, Vice President, coordinated closely with customs officials at the Association’s meeting room to provide expert opinions on the valuation of confiscated diamonds, which had been illegally imported without proper customs declaration.
Given that gemstones and jewelry are high-value goods and are at risk of being smuggled to evade duties, the Customs Department places strong emphasis on strict control and enforcement. This collaboration reflects effective public–private sector integration to enhance transparency, elevate valuation standards, and reinforce the global credibility of Thailand’s gem and jewelry industry.

On this occasion, the Association also welcomed students from the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (AIGS), who participated in a study visit under the cooperation with the Passenger Inspection Customs Office at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The visit aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to real-world operations within the industry.

The program included knowledge-sharing sessions on international import–export processes for gemstones and jewelry, covering customs procedures, regulatory frameworks, valuation practices, and challenges in global trade, as well as insights into market trends and the role of professional standards.
Mr. Chomphol Phornchindarak, President of TGJTA, Mr. Somchai Phornchindarak, Chairman of the Confederation, along with customs officials, jointly delivered lectures and shared practical experiences with the students—bridging perspectives from both the public and private sectors.
This collaboration marks another significant step in developing future industry professionals, while strengthening transparency, standards, and the international reputation of Thailand’s gem and jewelry sector.
