TGJTA Welcomes Nigerian Delegation to Strengthen Thailand–Nigeria Gems and Jewelry Cooperation

On May 15, 2025, the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA), in collaboration with the Gems, Jewelry, and Precious Metal Confederation of Thailand, officially welcomed a high-level delegation from Nigeria. The Nigerian delegation was led by Engr. Faruk Yusuf Yabo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development (MSMD), accompanied by 17 senior representatives including Engr. Akintunde Akinkunel Akinrogunde, Dr. (Mrs.) Ester N. Udo Ag, and Prof. Suleiman Hassan Bolaji.

Representing Thailand, Mr. Somchai Pornchindarak, President of the Confederation, was joined by TGJTA executives and board members including Mr. Atul Jauhari, Mr. Hiran Jain, Mr. Vijai Kumar Agarwal, Mr. Suttichai Chuenchomlada, Mr. Natthawut Phunphon, Mr. Anthony Peter Brook, Mr. Noppadol Prasertsian, and Mr. Wareerath Srichantamit.

 

Discussions focused on key areas such as knowledge and technology transfer in gem cutting and jewelry design, the establishment of industry standards, addressing smuggling and royalty systems, and promoting value addition to enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian gemstones. With Thailand recognized as a global hub for the gems and jewelry trade, TGJTA reaffirmed its readiness to share expertise and expand commercial collaboration.

Both sides agreed on practical next steps, including the formation of a Joint Committee to define an action agenda, the establishment of a Nigerian representative office in Thailand to facilitate business and SMEs, and encouraging Nigerian businesses in Thailand to join TGJTA membership for stronger trade cooperation.

 

This dialogue marked a significant milestone in Thailand–Nigeria relations, not only through knowledge and expertise exchange but also by reinforcing the shared vision of promoting the gems and jewelry industry towards international standards, transparency, and sustainable growth.
